Reactors sit at the heart of most chemical plants — and at the heart of most plant economics. A one-percent yield uplift on a commodity chemical line is frequently worth millions per year. A selectivity slip can push an entire downstream separation train into crisis.

Static recipes and cascade PID are the traditional tools. They cope with a stable feedstock and fresh catalyst. They do not cope with: slowly shifting feed composition, progressive catalyst deactivation, heat-exchange fouling, or the interactions between all three at once.
